Daily Reading from the USCCB: James 2:1-9
The author now begins to deal at greater length with matters of practical faith beginning with impartiality in the community of faith.
In the Christian community he says, there must be no discrimination based on position or wealth. Authentic worth consists in God’s election and God’s gifts. The rich tend to see themselves as powerful, and impose their will on other members of the Church. They set themselves up as judges over others and base their judgments on self-serving motives.
In fact, those who are closest to God are not the rich but the poor–believers who rely on God alone for their worth. We are all equal in the sight of God. Do I discriminate in my relationships with other members of the Church?
