Sharing the Word for March 16, 2021

Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent

March 16, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Matthew 20:17-28

Today’s reading has two themes. The first is the theme of Jesus’ suffering and death, mentioned now for the first time this Lent. The other theme is the ranking of Jesus’ disciples in his kingdom.

The basic question here is “Who is important?” Jesus answers that they are important who are willing to share his sufferings and to spend their lives in the service of others. The sons of Zebedee saw their discipleship–their importance–in sharing in a kingdom like the earthly kingdoms they were familiar with. Jesus tells them that this was not the kind of kingdom he was promising.

What do I see as the outcome of my dedication to Jesus? What kind of a kingdom am I looking for?
