Monday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
October 26, 2020
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 13:10-17
The leader of the synagogue invokes a narrow interpretation of the law of Sabbath observance. You’re not supposed to practice medicine on the Sabbath because that constitutes work. Jesus responds with a compassionate interpretation. If it’s permitted to tend to farm animals on the Sabbath, it’s permitted to take care of a human being on the Sabbath–especially one who has suffered so long.
Jesus’ critics want him to limit his benevolence to certain times and certain days. No healing on the Sabbath! Jesus refuses to allow his kindness to be limited. The need of the sufferer determines when and how he will act. Jesus doesn’t keep office hours!
Lord Jesus, help me and heal me when you see fit and as you see fit.
