Sharing the Word for March 13, 2023 – Third Week of Lent – Year 1

Monday of the Third Week of Lent

March 13, 2023
Daily Reading from the USCCB: 2 Kings 5:1-15ab

Naaman was not a particularly likely subject for God’s attention. He was the military leader of Syria, a chronic enemy of the Israelites. Moreover, by the time Naaman had made contact with Elisha, he had made up his mind about how the prophet should deal with him.

Things didn’t develop as Naaman expected, but he was cleansed of his leprosy. God worked as God saw fit, not as the human subject had envisioned.

God’s mercy is offered to us too, not necessarily as we think it should be, but because God is God. We are all members of a sinful people. Yet God cares for us anyhow. In our changing of heart, it’s important for us to remember precisely why God pays attention to us.
