Daily Reading from the USCCB: Jonah 4:1-11
Jonah remains annoyed with God for showing mercy to the Ninevites. He sits in a hut waiting to see what would happen next. The Lord planted a gourd to give him shade. Jonah was pleased with the plant. But the very next day God made the gourd plant die. This elicited a final dialogue between Jonah and God.
“You are sad,” God says, “about the gourd plant. You think I should have given it more care. But what about these Ninevites? Don’t you think it was right for me to exercise care for them, unenlightened as they are?”
The moral of the story is that God is merciful–more merciful than we are. We do wrong to try to be more just than God.
