I won’t devote a whole column to it, but suffice to say, judges from across the continent agree: you’re reading a fine magazine.
“It’s quirky; ” “it will touch people’s hearts, ” or “it’s too eccentric; ” “it’s the Catholic imagination at work. ” Those are just some of the reactions our editors had, over the years, to the late writer, editor, and poet Brian Doyle. All of us were startled to hear, last November, of Brian’s terminal illness. He died this past May at 60.
As a magazine, one connected to a sprawling digital outreach, we’re always listening. Yes, we listen to the news and to our many sources of inspirational information, always to bring strong content to you. More important, we listen to you, our loyal subscribers, to know your wants and needs, and to understand how well we’re meeting them.
We sometimes draw your attention to difficult moral issues, perhaps inspiring you to take action. At the same time, we maintain a steady stream of inspiration to nourish your spirit in other ways.
People love this column so much that they’re asking for more. Oh, that it were true! Nonetheless, more is coming. Some people actually have said this kind of Backstory message from the St. Anthony Messenger editor in chief would be a good addition to our digital media. We’re always looking for ways to reach more people with the good news, in the spirit of St. Francis.
Mr. President, tear down these walls. We, the people red, blue, or other have had at least two years of accusations, name calling, hate statements, distrust, and suspicion before November’s election.
