On October 3, 1226, Francis of Assisi died. Franciscans worldwide observe this day as the Transitus: his journey from this life to the next.
Francis knew he was dying. A doctor friend from Arezzo had come to visit him and told him that with God’s grace, all would be well.
Love God and do as you will, says St. Augustine, for love is its own commandment.
This is the Franciscan challenge in our own time: contemplative seeing, affective response, practical help, and sustained assistance.
Always it is the same: You suddenly realize that God has been there all along—that yes, God is present in your life.
