“Nothing apart from God can satisfy the human heart,
which is truly in search of God.”
–Saint Anthony of Padua
Reflection
Not long ago one of the friars living here at the Monastery observed that, out of this time of pandemic, we all might discover some new things about how we live. Today’s quote from Anthony might easily provide an insight into such a “transformed” lifestyle: “Nothing apart from God can satisfy the human heart, which is truly in search of God.”
Turning our thoughts from the real and tragic sufferings of this time, we might want to reflect for just a moment on how being shut in, separated from the ordinary routines of life beyond our four walls, has tended to challenge us. We are, I hope, thinking about what truly matters, what truly “satisfies the human heart.”
I hope and pray that my confrere’s observation is true: That down the road, we will all have learned what we can do without, in order to open us to what truly satisfies: namely God, and the true happiness which only God can satisfy.
