God revealed to Teresa that true humility is “to know what you can do and what I can do.” As participants in God’s divine nature, human beings are partners and collaborators with God. It is their nature to be drawn into the intimate circle of the Trinity. The soul is not lowly, God told Teresa, “for it is made in My image.” Teresa had no patience for anyone who refused to believe that God can give great favors to us—a refusal that “has indeed closed the door to receiving them.”
