Celebrating and Remembering the Dead

Reflect

While celebrated specifically in Mexico, the Days of the Dead are distinct but similar in other parts of Central and South America, the Philippines, and some parts of Europe. This two day holiday reunites two realities—the living and the dead. Families will create beautiful, intricate ofrendas (offerings) to honor the lives of loved ones who have passed away. It might have things like pictures, fresh flowers, favorite foods, candles.

Pray

God of the living and the dead,
We are more united in these different realities than we sometimes realize.
While we grieve our loved ones whose physical presence is no longer,
help us to remember we are still in relationship with them, still connected.
May we celebrate their lives and memories with joy, appreciation, and gratitude.
Amen.

Act

Think about family members or friends whose earthly lives have ended. If you were to create an ofrenda in their memory, what would it look like? What would you include to honor their life? Consider making an ofrenda and keeping it up during the month of November. When you pass by that sacred space, offer a prayer for their soul.
