Listening as Prayer

Reflect

In Psalm 40:7, the psalmist reminds us: “Sacrifice and offering you do not want; you opened my ears.” The real sacrifice God asks is our attention. You don’t have to pick up your rosary, light a candle, or fall on your knees. Just open your ears and listen for that still, small voice—even in the midst of a storm. God is there, beside you, inviting you to come closer, to enter into the shelter of his love, and to lay down your burden and let God share your load. And that is the sacrifice God desires.

Pray

Lord,
You who made the wind and the sea, the storm and the calm,
stand beside me today.
Open my heart and my eyes and my ears
to your voice always whispering to me,
to your hand always reaching for me,
and to your love always holding me close.
Amen.

Act

Take a moment to be still and open your ears to the voice of God whispering to you. If it helps, open your Bible and read a verse or two of your favorite Psalm, or read the Gospel for this Sunday’s liturgy. Then sit silently, listening to the words echoing in your mind. What sticks with you? A word? An image? Say it out loud. Write it down. Let it become your prayer for the day, for the week, perhaps even for the rest of your life.
