Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805-1871) was barely in his teens when he entered a seminary, and shortly thereafter everyone in his immediate family died of smallpox. While most relatives wanted him to come home and assume his duties as heir, one family member supported Kuriakose’s desire to follow his vocation. He is the first male saint of Indian origin.
