In her book The Enchanted Hour: The Miraculous Power of Reading Aloud in the Age of Distraction, author Meghan Cox Gurdon makes a compelling case for the importance of not just adults reading aloud to children, but also adults reading aloud to each other. “The act of reading together secures people to one another, creating order and connections as if we were quilt squares tacked together with threads made of stories,” she writes. Stories have the potential to move couples, families, and friends in similar directions—closer to God. Jesus knew the power of stories when he taught in the form of parables.

Lord, not only did you create stories
you became a man to live and tell the most wondrous of stories.
Help us not to take the gift of literacy for granted.
Help us to steward it well, drawing us closer together,
and closer to you.
