“We belong to you, Oh Lord of our longing.” This modern hymn is popular in America, and while there is a lot to be said for more classic hymns, something about this particular one rings exceptionally true. God is Lord of our longings—our longings for companionship, love, peace, happiness, basic needs, and justice. God understands our needs and longs to see them fulfilled. And even when our longings are not fulfilled, God is still Lord of them. For what have you been longing?

Lord of our longings, met and unmet,
remind us that one day we will find ultimate fulfillment.
Assure us that the longings we feel point us to our eternal nature.
You are with us now and forever, thank you.
