Reflect
Jesus was an observant Jew who had a profound respect for the Law. But he wasn’t a stickler about it. His desire was to fulfill the Law. And he fulfilled it by living a life of radical, unconditional love. St. Augustine hit the nail on the head when he famously said, “Love and then do as you please.” All the commandments align as we try to love God and love our neighbor.
Pray
Jesus, it’s so easy to become obsessed and scrupulous
about obeying all the commandments. You challenge me
to look beyond the letter of the Law to get to its purpose and fulfillment—
your challenge to love God and love my neighbor.
May your Spirit mold my heart into the image of your Sacred Heart
so that it too may be transformed into a loving home for everyone I encounter.
Amen.
Act
As you ponder the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5:1-22) determine how each one is expressed in Jesus’ command to love God and love others.
