Sharing the Word for August 14, 2023 – Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time – Year 1

Memorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe

Daily Reading from the USCCB: Deuteronomy 10:12-22

How are the Israelites supposed to behave? First, God’s people are called to be mindful of their special relationship with God–chosen to be God’s own. They are to be open and receptive to grace and guidance, to be circumcised of heart–generous in their response to God’s law.

Secondly, they must befriend the alien–that is look out for those whose low standing does not guarantee their survival. Even as God looked after the Israelites when they were weak, so they must look out for others.

We are called to love–God and neighbor–because we have been loved first. If we find it hard to love, the reason may be that we have lost sight of how much we have been loved ourselves.

  1. In order for God to love me, I first must Love myself. Then I can Love God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength.
