Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 4:38-44
The early chapters of Luke present Jesus as teacher, exorcist, and healer. These activities constitute one single program that embraces everything that Jesus did.
Jesus presented himself as the proclaimer of the kingdom. This was the purpose of all his activity. “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God,” he says. “For this purpose I have been sent.”
Teaching, casting out demons, healing, were all part of the same message: the kingdom is here. Some of the message is presented in words, some in actions. But everything in Jesus’ ministry was intended to proclaim that God’s love was taking over the world, that through Jesus all creation would be brought to fulfillment. What does Jesus’ proclamation of the kingdom mean to me?
