Daily Reading from the USCCB: Numbers 13:1-2, 25-14:1, 26a-29a, 34-35
The Israelites finally come to the land promised to them and they don’t like it! It’s too demanding, too difficult for them. In their dismay, the Israelites rightly conclude that they can’t do the job of conquest themselves. But they fail to take into account the help that God will give them.
In every demanding situation we have to take into account both our own capabilities–or lack of them–and God’s help. We may not presume on either, but we must not undervalue either.
Sometimes God’s demands of us and God’s gifts to us seem to be too much. We don’t understand them. We’re afraid of them. But still they are acts of God’s love for us and have to be dealt with accordingly.
