Daily Reading from the USCCB: Psalm 34:2-3, 6-7, 17-18, 19, 23
This is a song of confidence. In it we praise God, the defender of the poor. God will hear the cry of the needy and will save them in time of distress. He’s close to the poor and the brokenhearted. He pays special attention to them.
At some time or another we all find ourselves distressed, broken, poor, in need of God’s help. But whatever our trouble may be we can be confident that the Lord will help us if we call on him. Our need for his attention constitutes our claim on him.
In Advent we look forward to the Lord’s coming to care for us and enliven us and defend us and save us. “The Lord hears the cry of the poor.”
