Daily Reading from the USCCB: Genesis 3:1-8
Now comes evil. Humans find themselves attracted by the prospect of unlimited knowledge. They want to assume mastery over their own destiny. After their decision to assume God’s prerogatives, they discover that their relationship with God is no longer the same. They are naked and ashamed.
Evil is one of the mysteries of creation. The involvement of the serpent is a symbol of vulnerability in human creatures that’s not of their own making. Yet the fact remains that it was the human creature who sinned and set up a tension with God that would affect every future human being.
We don’t understand all the implications of that original sin, but we know that it has affected us and that we are all somehow sinners.
