Daily Reading from the USCCB: Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Deuteronomy reminds us that we determine our own future. We must choose.
Yet even if we have chosen to belong to God, God calls us to a constant re-assertion of our choice. This is because we live in time. God doesn’t give us our life all at once and forever. There is also the fact that our freedom is enfeebled, so we have to make our decisions over and over again if they’re going to be firm.
Lent is a time of re-enforcement of our decision for God. It’s a time to weed out what keeps us from him, to strengthen what we need to stay strong in him. During Lent God calls us to say our “Yes” once more, more firmly, more finally.
