Daily Reading from the USCCB: 2 Corinthians 8:1-9
Paul now turns to another topic. The church in Jerusalem was living in great poverty as a result of persecution and Christians elsewhere were coming to its aid with financial assistance. The churches of Macedonia had been particularly generous in this undertaking. They gave far beyond what anyone could have expected from them.
Paul now encourages the Corinthians to be equally generous and to imitate the poverty of Christ. This will be an expression of their love for their fellow Christians rather than the fulfillment of a command from Paul.
Paul here lays the foundation for a Christian spirituality of generosity. The ability to give–the desire to give to others–is itself a gift. How generous am I to my brothers and sisters? Why?
