Daily Reading from the USCCB: Matthew 6:19-23
Jesus tells his hearers that their values should be like God’s: heaven-oriented, not earth-oriented. If our value system–that which illuminates our interior–isn’t working right, everything is out of order. Here Jesus proclaims still again that following him consists in an ongoing effort to bring our values into harmony with God’s.
The world’s values are different. Most of us don’t care about storing up treasure in heaven. We are more interested in things like money and popularity and success and economic security. Such things seem much more comforting to us–much more useful, much more immediately worthwhile.
Treasures in heaven don’t seem to have much appeal. Yet Jesus says that that’s where real wealth lies. Where and what are my treasures?
