Daily Reading from the USCCB: Genesis 12:1-9

The early chapters of Genesis dealt with the story of human sinfulness. With Abram the story of human redemption begins.

God undertakes the reversal of the sinfulness that became imbedded in mankind through the self-seeking of Adam and Eve. Out of nowhere God calls Abram to be the agent of his plan of salvation. He promises him descendants and territory. This individual would become the standard of God’s blessing. Abram puts himself at God’s disposal. In so doing, he becomes the father of all persons of faith.

When we commit ourselves by faith to the will of God, we are following Abram’s example and uniting ourselves to all who have been obedient to him. Because we are people of faith, we are children of Abram.
