Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord

March 25, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 1:26-38

Today, nine months before we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation. On this day Gabriel announced to Mary that she would become the mother of the Messiah. On this day Mary conceived Jesus through the intervention of the Holy Spirit.

Luke’s Gospel gives the details. Mary is taken aback. She’s not sure how all this can happen. Yet she agrees to collaborate with God’s plan. “I am the handmaid of the Lord,” she says.

Each of us has a role to play in God’s plans. We may not understand exactly what God has in mind for us. But God expects us to respond to his invitation just as Mary did. “Behold the servant of the Lord. May it happen as you wish.”
