Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 14:25-33

Jesus is talking about discipleship and about the level of dedication that’s required from his followers. He makes clear that discipleship is demanding. It’s more important than family. It requires effort and commitment and the generous expenditure of our resources. It’s an all-embracing vocation that must not be entered without mature deliberation. The price of discipleship is not small.

We are called to pay a price for discipleship just as Jesus’ first disciples were. Our cost may not be as great as theirs, but it’s real. We are called to love the unlovable, to resist our inborn inclinations to self- indulgence, to share our resources with the poor. Our discipleship does not require heroic self-sacrifice, but consistent hard-nosed dedication.
