Sharing the Word for November 6, 2020

Friday of the Thirty-first Week in Ordinary Time

November 6, 2020
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 16:1-8

This parable of the dishonest steward is difficult. What’s Jesus’ point? Jesus does not intend to praise dishonesty. More likely he intends to highlight the craftiness of the steward who took advantage of the opportunities that were presented to him to work his way out of trouble. Sometimes crooks are better at what they do than honest folks!

The point seems to be that our pursuit of the kingdom calls for initiative, effort, exertion. Jesus invites us to make use of the opportunities that are presented to us in our pursuit of salvation.

Such opportunities include temptations, struggles with prayer, tensions with our brothers and sisters, difficulties with some of Jesus’ teachings. With a little creativity we can turn all this to our benefit.
