Wednesday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
October 26, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 13:22-30
People ask Jesus whether only a few people will be saved. Jesus doesn’t answer that question, but he does say that many will not be saved. And those who are will need to strive to qualify for admission. Superficial commitment will not be sufficient. Many who think that they have done enough to qualify will find that they are excluded. Others–outsiders who seemed to be less likely prospects–will find themselves seated at the banquet of the kingdom with Abraham and his descendants.
Jesus’ point here is that we can’t deserve or earn admission to the kingdom. But at the same time we have to work for it. Merely going through the motions of discipleship isn’t enough. How do I relate to the kingdom?
