Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 11:15-26
This reading is about power–the power of the devil and the power of Jesus. Some in the crowd said that Jesus cast out devils by the power of the devils themselves. And Jesus dismisses that comment and says that what he does is a sign that he is stronger than the devil.
Jesus still casts out devils today in the power of his Church. The Church practices formal ritual exorcism on occasion. More frequently the Church deals with the power of the devil in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in prayer, through the support that the faithful offer one another.
Jesus’ present power over the devil should come as no surprise. He is still the Lord–still the same loving and powerful Jesus he always was.
