Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 9:18-22
Luke continues to treat the question of Jesus’ identity. Some thought he was a political messiah. Peter professes Jesus to be “the Christ of God.” Jesus accepts this response, but he wants to be sure Peter is aware of the implications of it. Jesus is indeed “the Christ of God”–the Messiah–but a messiah who would suffer and die.
In our association with Jesus, we have to be sure that we are dealing with the full Jesus–the criminal on the cross as well as the risen Lord. That’s why Catholic spirituality teaches us to stay in touch with the Lord through Scripture and prayer and reflection and the liturgy. Confining ourselves to one approach to Jesus will not give us the full picture.
